Why Don’t I Focus On Back Pain?

Why doesn’t my mission focus on relieving neck and back pain?

This is a great question. You see, there is a common misconception that chiropractic care is only beneficial for neck and back pain.  While chiropractic has been documented as the most effective, conservative care for such issues, chiropractic is about much more than just pain.  (See partial list near bottom of post.)

Chiropractors are nervous system experts first, the result of which leads to the “pain expert” label.

Why is this an important distinction? The nervous system controls every cell of your body. With a healthy nervous system and clear communication signals to those very cells, the body has its best chance to function at its highest level, which affects all processes in the body.

As a chiropractor, I utilize my education, clinical experience, and specific tools & techniques to identify interference in the communication between the nervous system and the rest of the body, and I administer an impulse into the nervous system (an adjustment) to restore this communication cycle.

It is this communication cycle–free of interference–that allows the body to restore proper motion, lower inflammation, reduce pain, improve digestion, lower stress, improve sleep, reduce allergies, and much, much more.

Yes, chiropractic is a neurological-muscular-skeletal approach to healthcare. However, many people are unaware of the possible neurological impact on the whole body and focus just on tight muscles and achy joints.

For your reference, here are some links to studies that demonstrate the potential impact that a healthy nervous system can have on one’s life, all after receiving chiropractic care. It’s important to note that chiropractic does not treat any of these issues. Chiropractic restores nervous system communication to its optimum level, which may allow the outcomes below based on the body’s incredible ability to maximize homeostasis and heal.

5 Tips To Put The Breaks On Stress

The holiday season is often one of increased stress for many people.   It is the perfect opportunity to honor friends and family with quality time (yay, time off work!) and gift giving.  But it also creates more stressful situations than many people face the whole prior year added together.

From seeing family members who may not be your cup of tea, to being thrust into uncomfortable social situations, to prime cold and flu season, to the pressure to pick out the perfect gift or spend more money than budgeted, the holidays can lead to very high level of STRESS!

Stress impacts your health in many ways…

…especially when it is chronic – lasting long periods of time – although even short-term stress at very high levels can also be detrimental.

It is commonly know that stress can increase blood pressure, cause anxiety, and result in headaches.  Not to mention, stress can lead to muscle tightness, fatigue, and feelings of overwhelm, anger, or irritability.  Stress can even impact your decisions and behaviors, causing poor eating, addictions, and social withdrawal.

Physiologically, stress causes an increase in the production of cortisol, which is why cortisol is known asStress “the stress hormone.”  Unfortunately, with excess cortisol comes insulin resistance, meaning that insulin is  unable to remove glucose from the bloodstream at an optimal level.  Additionally, cortisol directly inhibits the production of insulin, further contributing to an increase in blood glucose levels.

Cortisol also impairs the function of the immune system.  People under high levels of stress are more prone to infections and chronic diseases.  Add to this a decline in thyroid function, an increase in abdominal fat, and impaired memory function and you have a recipe for poor health.

So, how do you put the breaks on stress?  Here are 5 tips:

1.  Attend a yoga class.  This will provide much needed exercise in a peaceful and tranquil environment.  And if you don’t think yoga is enough exercise, then I bet you haven’t tried it yet!

2.  Go to bed by 10pm.  With all the stressful situations discussed above, the last thing you need is lack of sleep.  If you go to bed by 10pm, your body will produce the maximum amount of human growth hormone, which is responsible for rejuvenation and repair—in other words, HEALING!

3.  Stay well hydrated.  Drinking plenty of water allows your body to flush out toxins, supports the function of the immune and lymphatic systems, and plays a role in optimal digestion.

4.  Give yourself permission to say no.  Given the demands of the holiday season, you are still in charge of whether you overload your schedule or purposefully insert downtime to rest and recover.

5.  See a chiropractor.  An adjustment to the nervous system can help restore balance between sympathetic fight-or-flight mode and parasympathetic resting mode, allowing your body a chance to balance those stress hormones naturally.

DIY Essential Oils Foaming Hand Soap

Now that the FDA has ordered anti-bacterial hand soap to be taken off the shelves, it is the perfect time to learn how to make your own HEALTHY, foaming hand soap with pure Young Living Essential Oils.  Here is my recipe for DIY foaming hand soap:

  • Empty foaming hand-soap bottle with pump – can be purchased at discount retailers or Target, or you can reuse a bottle from pre-made hand soap
  • 1 gallon distilled water – I bought mine at Target for a buck
  • 2 oz. bottle of Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Hemp Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap – Again, Target offers this in some stores in the travel section ($1.99)
  • 15 drops Young Living Lavender Oil (and any other oil of your choosing, especially Thieves or Tea Tree)
  1. Pour castile soap into the empty foaming bottle.
  2. Add your oils.
  3. Fill with distilled water.  Remember to leave enough space to add the pump. Otherwise, your contents will spill over the top and be wasted.
  4. Shake occasionally.
  5. Enjoy!

In Healing Myself I Developed A Health Coaching Program

You already know I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, but did you know that I am also a health coach? YES!  I also provide health coaching.

I am an Essential Healing™ health coach, and my passion for health began nearly 2 decades ago after I suffered a severe back injury, one virtually unheard of in a physically active, extremely fit 22-year-old.

Since that time, both my professional and personal experiences and interests have led me to develop my health-coaching program—Essential Healing™.

As a Chiropractor, I received hundreds of hours of nutrition and general health education. Add this to my personal interest in all things healthy for the mind, body, and spirit that goes back 20 years.

But I think the most important factor has been my own personal healing journey.

You see, I have been through it all myself. From a severe back injury (that supposedly required surgery—I declined because I felt there had to be another way) to chronic pain and fatigue to autoimmune issues to struggles with weight to chronic Epstein Barr virus, I know what you are going through…because I have been through it, too!

Some say one can never truly understand another’s experience until they go through it themselves. Well, I have done just that.

I know what it’s like to be the patient. I know what it’s like to feel tired all of the time, to feel great one day and hopeless the next, to feel like there are no answers, and to feel like no one else “gets it.” I also know what it’s like to sleep 18 hours a day with no hope in sight. But I don’t live this way anymore!

So, is my life perfect today? Do I make the best decisions all day every day? Am I free of challenging experiences? NO! Of course not. I relish these as opportunities to grow and continue to heal, as healing is a continuous journey.

Here’s what I CAN say. My life is more joyous, peaceful, and fulfilling today than I ever thought possible during those months I slept all day on the couch.

It didn’t happen overnight. But with the right guidance, beneficial support, and an unrelenting commitment to myself, I can say that I am IN LOVE with my life today.

The possibility of healing is within your reach…if you are willing to make that stretch, commit to yourself, and make some healthy changes.

Gut-Healing Bone Broth

Have you ever made your own bone broth?  Bone broth contains beneficial minerals and amino acids needed to heal the digestive system and toxic cells, as well as provide essential nutrients to your body.

To a crock-pot, add:

  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced/chopped
  • 2-4 beef bones, obtained from local health food store or farmers market, including at least one knuckle bone
  • ½ Tbsp Celtic sea salt
  • 2 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar
  • Water-enough to fill the crock pot
  1. Place the vegetables in the bottom of the crock pot.
  2. Add the beef bones.
  3. Pour apple cider vinegar over bones and add salt.
  4. Cover everything with water, filling crock pot. The more you make, the less often you have to make it!
  5. Turn crock pot on high until light boil is achieved, then place on low setting for 8 to 24 hours.
  6. After cooking, let cool, & pour broth through a strainer.
  7. Vegetables can be saved and used in a blended soup, as part of your meals. Make sure you discard any small pieces of bone.
  8. Before I consume the broth, I like to put it in the refrigerator overnight so it is easy to remove the fat from the top of the broth.
  9. After removing fat, separate broth into individual containers. If freezing, use freezer-safe glass and do not fill the containers all the way full. They can break!
  10. Store 3 servings (1 cup each) in the refrigerator and the rest can be frozen. As you use a cup each day, replace it with one of those from the freezer.
  11. Drink one cup of bone or vegetable broth every day. You can drink it warm like tea or pour it over your vegetables during one of your meals.

What Is Essential Healing?

Essentialism is the view that, for any specific entity (such as an animal, a group of people, a physical object, a concept), there is a set of attributes which are necessary to its identity and function.  (Cartwright, R. L. (1968). “Some remarks on essentialism”. The Journal of Philosophy 65 (20): 615–626.)

What, then, is essential in regards to optimum health and healing?

From my experience as a Doctor of Chiropractic and my physical, physiological, and philosophical views on wellness, Essential Healing™ involves:

  • Optimum nerve flow (function of the Nervous System)
  • Optimum motion/movement
  • Optimum nutrition
  • Optimum emotional well-being

My Essential Healing™ Program is 6 months of personalized chiropractic care coupled with health & wellness coaching, including direct support and significant one-on-one time so that I can deliver tools for you to use to improve your health.  For many people, an improvement in health serves as the perfect catalyst for changing their lives!

The Essential Healing™ Program is ideal for those who need specific, detailed guidance and increased accountability on the journey to improved health.  To obtain more information, call 520-484-3471.

Summer Time Is The Perfect Time To Embrace Fruit

In this day and age where many people are terrified to eat fruit due to its sugar content, folks are also missing out on the powerful antioxidants and other health benefits that fruit provides.  Maybe this irrational fear of fruit is one part of the equation when a high level of health is lacking.  Let’s look at the lovely blueberry.

Blueberries contain a significant amount of nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese.

Blueberries are also packed with antioxidants.  You know, those free radical fighters that help slow down aging and prevent disease processes.  Antioxidants are also important in slowing down and reversing DNA damage from these free radicals.

Some studies suggest blueberries also help lower blood pressure and may help prevent heart disease.

Oxidative stress also impacts memory and cognitive function.  So, blueberries and their antioxidants are beneficial here, as well.

Blueberries have also been shown to improve(!) insulin sensitivity and metabolism of glucose.  People avoid fruits because of the sugar content, but blueberries actually help in glucose metabolism!

For fruit lovers, this is great news.  But if you feel like you are not quite ready for a fruit fest, at least start incorporating fruits with low glycemic-load into your daily diet.  Low-glycemic-load fruits include:

  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cherries
  • Grapefruit
  • Grapes
  • Guava
  • Kiwi
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Mango
  • Nectarines
  • Oranges
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Pineapple
  • Plum
  • Prunes
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon

And remember, humans have been eating fresh fruits and vegetables for thousands of years.  Processed foods didn’t come into the picture until the 1940s!

Is Your Level Of Health Your Biggest Obstacle?

We all have dreams of the kind of life we want to live. A happy, joyous family, a prosperous job, and lots of free time to pursue the things we love, just for starters.

Health is a huge part of this equation. You might be surprised at how many times I hear in my office how a patient feels stuck or prohibited from pursuing their dreams because they don’t feel well. They are tired, foggy headed, achy, or just want to rest and zone out after a long day at work. They simply don’t have the energy to go after what they want or make the changes that would help them to do so.

Without true health, it isn’t surprising that creating one’s dream life feels exhausting or impossible.

That’s why my vision is to help people pursue the life they love through better health with chiropractic care.

The nervous system controls every cell of your body. With a healthy nervous system and clear communication signals to those very cells, the body has its best chance to function at its highest level. This is the opportunity that chiropractic provides.

But it’s not all up to the chiropractor. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I do my absolute best for my patients inside my office walls, and it is up to the patient to implement additional recommendations outside of the office, such as changing some of the things they are eating, exercises, and stress reduction techniques.

So, if you are one of those folks who says to yourself, “If only I felt better…,” then chiropractic might be perfect to help you take the next leap forward! Call today for a new patient appointment: 520-484-3471
